Ankimo / Fast Learning
Developer: Ko Horii (Fast Learning)
After 32 years at a company, I took early retirement and went back to university. Encountering ways of learning I had never known before, I often thought: "I wish I had known this when I was younger" — sometimes even feeling it might have changed my life.
At the same time, I felt a growing desire to be involved in education.
Then, during an IT class at university, the idea came to me: an app that prompts you at the right review moment, asking "Do you still remember this?"
The Q&A format came from my years in planning and sales promotion. Providing sales tools to frontline staff taught me firsthand that breaking knowledge into Q&A pairs is one of the most effective ways to transfer understanding — even to complete beginners.
The science came later. While building the app, I discovered that cognitive psychology — including the "generation effect" — strongly supports the Q&A approach. The idea came first; the research followed.
Ankimo is designed not on intuition, but on findings from cognitive and educational psychology. The app references 24 scientific studies on memory retention, including spaced repetition, retrieval practice, and metacognition.
